Programmes :: Civic and Human Rights Education

Trainings

Young peer educators being trained in peer education, counseling and guidance to fellow young people. We have Over 100 peer educators / counselors being trained in higher institutions of learning.

Dance and Drama

One of the strategies used in sensitization sessions in communities. Over 8500 people have been reached with music dance and drama shows with messages of behaviors and attitude change.

According to Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948), all human beings are born free and equal. All people have the rights to life and should enjoy all the rights as stipulated in conventions and charters. The constitution of Uganda (1995) also outlines the rights of her citizens regardless of race, color, gender, education, party, religion and others as longer as he/she is a human being in Uganda.

Human Rights affect our day-to-day actions and way of life. They are the foundation of freedom, justice and peace. In observing, promoting and protecting them, an individual, group or community is/are helped to grow and develop their potential for self actualization. The program enhances a better understanding of rights, entitlements and obligations of the state and the citizens to young people through;

• Developing young people’s commitment to active citizenship and governance by equipping them with knowledge and skills to competently and meaningfully participate and contribute to making informed decisions for the development of their communities and the nation as a whole.

• Building the capacity of young people by training them in human rights with focus on children, women’s rights, civic education and democracy to be able to effectively demand democratic accountable and development centered governance.

Achievements

Youth AID has organized sensitization and awareness workshops, seminars, dialogues, debts and trainings for different stakeholders in the community including local leaders, religious leaders, NGOs/CBOs, children and the youths. The objective was to empower the community, children and the youth to speak out and report human rights violations and social injustices affecting young people and the community in general.

School clubs formation

The organization implements the human rights promotion in schools as one way of promoting children rights. Human rights debates have been carried out in schools and 10 schools were reached with 30 students in each club. Human rights clubs were formed to continue with the crusade of human rights promotion and education.

Peer education training

During the course of the year, youth were trained in peer education and counseling. Over 400 youth were taken through this training. The organization believes that this is one way of sustainability of the programme. The trained young people are carrying on the crusade in their respective communities with the help of the teachers responsible with human rights promotion issues.
